That plastic cover is for the fuel evaporative emissions crap that they have to sell California motorcycles with.

To me the transmission seems fine. It's a little rough (slight jerk) shifting from neutral into first and the transition from first to second gear can be a little rough if you don't hit it in the right RPM range. I did a little experimenting with it yesterday. This all depends on how you accelerate. This bike DOES NOT like when you shift without the clutch and the owners manual tells you not to. I have been riding sports bikes for a long time and am accustomed to the close gear ratio of their gearboxes. Also, I seem to keep catching neutral on the downshift to first.
